Every Format Side by Side

The table pulls every published figure for the route in one place. Operator names are given because each company sets its own inclusions: some add the Bolivian park fees, others list them as extras on top. Howlanders sells the four-day round trip, Ando Libre the flexible round trip or one-way, and Koa Travel the three-day return crossing on its own tour page.

Pickup in San Pedro is 07:00 to 07:30, or 06:00 from April to September, and a one-way ends in Uyuni town around 15:00 on the third day. Border queues can run late, so do not book an onward bus or flight for the same afternoon.

When weather forces a change, the Salar de Uyuni and Laguna Colorada always stay on the route. The first night is basic: shared rooms of three to six beds, and a hot shower costs 10 bolivianos (about $1.50).

What You Pay on the Bolivian Side

Nomades lists the fixed fees for the one-way crossing at Bs 210 in total, split across three gates, plus a border fee and paid toilets. Howlanders quotes about 300 BOB as the cash to carry, while Nomades says bring at least Bs 500 to cover fees, tips and extras. Either way, plan the cash before you leave San Pedro: Cuppatoco reports only two ATMs in town, and one of them shuts at 14:00.

Nomades puts the highest point at about 5,000 m and asks for one or two days above 2,500 m before departure, which San Pedro gives you. Age and health limits differ by operator: Nomades sets a minimum age of 8 and does not take pregnant travellers and needs a medical certificate for anyone over 65, while the Koa Travel crossing takes children from 10 and nobody over 70.

Return or one-way

The Koa Travel crossing brings you back to San Pedro on the third day, with a private transfer out of the Bolivian border on the last leg. Many travellers instead take a one-way crossing and continue into Bolivia. That is a different booking and usually cheaper, but it leaves you in Uyuni with your onward travel to arrange.

What the $880 Koa crossing covers

A shared van to the border, a 4WD with driver across Bolivia, two nights at a hotel with heating and hot water and a private room, six of the seven meals, an English-speaking guide and a small group in one car. The US$25 per person national park and Isla Incahuasi fees are included. Dinner on the second night in Uyuni is not.

The conditions are basic by design

The operator states it directly: the experience is not for those who love luxury, pampering or comfortable temperatures. You are above 4,000 m for most of three days.

Why San Pedro to Uyuni Beats the Reverse

Cuppatoco argues the San Pedro to Uyuni direction is the stronger one, because the salar arrives as the climax and you see it at sunrise on the last day rather than burning the highlight first. The same source notes that later-leaving departures avoid the jeep convoy that forms at the border. Both points favour the standard Chile-to-Bolivia routing over starting in Uyuni.

Close the Loop Before You Book

A shared one-way looks cheapest until you stack what sits on top. Nomades quotes $240 for the shared 3-day one-way, with about Bs 210 of reserve, hot spring and Incahuasi fees, a 15 BOB border fee, paid toilets and a recommended cash buffer of Bs 350 to 500, and an optional English guide that stops at the border. A return format closes the loop in one booking: the Koa Travel 3-day round trip at $880 carries the park and Incahuasi fees, $25 per person, inside the price, and the Howlanders 4-day round trip at $385 leaves about 300 BOB as your cash planning.

A return format fits a traveller based in San Pedro who needs to be back for a flight from Calama. The one-way fits travellers continuing through Bolivia with onward time to spare.

Wet Months, Dry Months and What Gets Cut

From January to March, a shallow layer of water, one to two inches deep, turns the surface into a mirror. Cuppatoco warns the water makes perspective photography harder and that you should bring shoes you do not mind getting wet. Howlanders adds that during the rainy season, with flood risk at its peak later in that window, stops such as Incahuasi, the Lagunillas, the Chullpas and the salar sunset may be cut from the route.

In the dry months the water is gone and perspective photography is easier, but winter nights are severe: Nomades gives -20 to 16 C between June and September on this route, against 4 to 23 C in summer. Pack layers and a sleeping bag for winter departures either way.
