Atacama Lagoons Tour Compared: Altiplano, Cejar and Baltinache

Altiplano Day: Chaxa, Miscanti, Miñiques

The altiplano day covers about 115 km on Route 23 through Toconao and Socaire, about 2 hours of driving before the first stop. The usual order is Laguna Chaxa on the Salar de Atacama, where three flamingo species feed, then Miscanti, about an hour further on, and Miñiques, both above 4,100 m and separated by a lava flow. The Piedras Rojas & Altiplanic Lagoons Full-Day runs this route in ten hours with breakfast, lunch and the park admissions in the $86 price. An Adventurous World paid the equivalent of $75 for a tour of the same circuit with lunch.

Because the lagoons sit near 4,200 m, most travellers do this day on day 3 or later once acclimatised.

Altitude separates the two groups

Piedras Rojas and the altiplano lagoons sit at 4,200 m. Cejar and Baltinache are near the valley floor. If you have just arrived in San Pedro, do the low ones first and give yourself two nights before going up.

Entrance fees vary from included to substantial

The full-day Piedras Rojas tour folds about 29,000 CLP of fees into the price. The Laguna Cejar listing does the opposite: it says the CLP 20,000 ticket is not included and is paid 12 hours before departure, while the official Cejar ticket is CLP 15,000 for adults (13 to 59), CLP 10,000 over 60 and CLP 5,000 up to 12, sold online by card. That is a real 15,000 to 20,000 CLP swing between two tours that look similarly priced.

Cejar, Chaxa, Piedras Rojas with Miscanti and Miñiques, and Puritama sell online by card. Baltinache (CLP 6,000 during the pause, CLP 12,000 standard), Tebenquiche (CLP 6,000) and Rainbow Valley are cash on site.

Floating has rules

The float at Cejar happens in Laguna Piedra, with about 20 minutes in the water and no sunscreen allowed. Rinse afterwards, because the salt crust is unpleasant when it dries. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and flip-flops, because almost none of these tours supply them.

Children under 6 are not suitable.

Cejar Complex: The Float Is at Laguna Piedra

The float happens in Laguna Piedra, inside the Cejar site. Laguna Cejar itself is a viewing lagoon for flamingos and salt crusts, and Tebenquiche and Ojos del Salar are closed to swimming. The official ticket allows 1 hour on site from your timed slot, with about 20 minutes recommended in the water.

Children under 6 are not suited to the site. The Cejar ticket is bought online by card: CLP 15,000 for ages 13-59, CLP 10,000 for 60+, CLP 5,000 up to 12. Howlanders lists admission as included on its own Cejar product, so check what the listing covers before you book.

On the Cejar Lagoon Float & Salar Tour the 20,000 CLP ticket is not in the price.

Baltinache: Walking Only While Bathing Is Suspended

Before the suspension you could bathe in one lagoon for up to 15 minutes. Bathing is now suspended in all the lagoons until about the end of November. The site stays open for the easy trail and viewpoints, and one lagoon may reopen for floating in December, unconfirmed.

One traveller reports fewer visitors since the ban. If floating matters to you, book the Cejar day and treat Baltinache as a walk. Check the status with your operator the day before.

Start Times, Minimum Ages and the Tuesday Rule

The Cejar day is an afternoon tour, with pickup between 14:45 and 15:25 and return about 18:30, and it does not run on Tuesdays because the park closes for maintenance. Baltinache runs twice daily, at 07:00 and 14:00, over about 4.5 hours, and takes children from age 3, the loosest age limit of the three. The altiplano day starts early and takes about 10 hours, with the fixed-departure Piedras Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons & Chaxa tour leaving at 07:00.

One Baltinache operator advises leaving 45 minutes of buffer before an astronomy tour the same evening. Ages matter for families: the Cejar tour takes 7 and over, the altiplano days take 8 and over or bar under 7.

Card Online or Cash at the Gate

The sites sell tickets two ways. Cejar, Chaxa, Piedras Rojas with Miscanti and Miñiques, and Valle de la Luna sell online by card with timed slots. Baltinache, Tebenquiche, Rainbow Valley and Yerbas Buenas take cash on site.

Baltinache fee figures differ by source: one operator lists CLP 6,000 for adults and CLP 3,000 for ages 5-17 during the bathing suspension, a blog lists CLP 10,000 on top of the tour, and the standard fee when bathing resumes is CLP 12,000. On the altiplano day the admissions sit inside the tour price: the Piedras Rojas & Altiplanic Lagoons Full-Day includes about 29,000 CLP of admissions in its $86, while the entry-free Ruta de los Salares Full-Day Salt Flats Tour charges nothing extra at any stop.
