Pickup starts between 4:30 and 5:10 depending on the operator and your hotel, then it is roughly 1.5 hours of driving to the field. Steam peaks between 5:30 and 7:30, with columns up to 10 m, so tours time the walk through the geyser basin for that window. Breakfast comes about halfway through the visit, and the drive back adds the Putana river crossing and the village of Machuca before most vans are back in San Pedro near 12:00.

Nomades runs the same route daily except 1 January and 25 December.

Why Sunrise and Not Later

Steam peaks at sunrise, which is why the geyser field is the first stop of the day and departures leave San Pedro between 4:30 and 5:10. If you want a quieter basin rather than the tallest columns, Worldly Adventurer says 8 to 9 am is less crowded than sunrise.

The 15,000 CLP Cash Rule

The El Tatio entrance is 15,000 CLP (about $15) per person, paid in cash, and the kiosks and rural stalls on the route take no cards. One catalog listing contradicts itself: the El Tatio Geysers & Wetlands Sunrise Tour shows a ticket under Included while the operator's own notes say the fee is paid at the park, so confirm at checkout. The tours below state it plainly: the half-day sunrise tour with breakfast charges a $19 park ticket paid on top, and the full-day tour with Vado Putana and Machuca charges 15,000 CLP (about $15) on top.

What Local Operators Charge

Away from the booking platforms, Nomades puts its shared sunrise tour at CLP 35,000 per person with the 15,000 CLP entrance separate, and its private option at CLP 300,000 for one traveller, CLP 150,000 per person for two and CLP 49,000 per person for ten. Those figures show how the private premium collapses once a group fills the van. Whichever way you book, the sequencing advice from operators is the same: carry pesos, because the kiosks on the route take no cards, and book El Tatio for day two or later, never the morning after a late stargazing tour.

The park fee is the thing to check

The standard sunrise tour is contradictory on its own listing: "Ticket" appears under what is included, while the operator's notes say the park entrance fee must be paid at the park in cash. El Tatio takes cash only (15,000 CLP). The 3-day combo is explicit: El Tatio's 15,000 CLP is paid in advance at the agency.

Ask before you travel; the geysers do not take excuses at 6 AM.

This is an altitude tour, not a sightseeing stop

The field sits at 4,200 to 4,320 m depending on the operator, and you go from 2,400 m to that in under two hours while half asleep. The operator asks for no alcohol the night before and good hydration, and advises against it for pregnant travellers, young children and anyone with heart or blood-pressure conditions. Nomades does not admit children under 8, and the 3-day combo listing says under 9.

Cold that people underestimate

Geyser dawns average around −6 °C in summer and can fall to −20 °C in winter. Bring the warmest layer you own. Swimming in the old pool is currently not permitted, so leave the swimsuit at home.

The fumarole water runs above 85 C, so staying on the marked paths matters more here than at any lowland site.

The Hot Spring Question

The old rustic pool at El Tatio is currently closed to swimming, so do not pack a swimsuit for the geysers unless your specific listing confirms a pool stop. The Putana river ford and the village of Machuca on the way back are viewing stops, not baths. If a soak is the goal, the dedicated hot springs options around San Pedro, such as Puritama, are separate day trips with their own tickets.
