Rainbow Valley Tour Atacama: Distance, Altitude and the Two Gates

The Drive

Atacama Chile Tours puts Rainbow Valley about 90 km north of San Pedro, roughly 1.5 hours each way on a paved highway that turns to desert track near the end. Cascada gives 65 km at around 3,000 m. Either way, count on 1 to 1.5 hours of driving in each direction of the 6-hour outing, and note that mobile coverage drops out along the route.

It is the Atacama trip without the crowd

Valle de la Luna takes thousands of people a week. Rainbow Valley takes a van. It sits 1 to 1.5 hours (about 90 km) north of San Pedro in the Cordillera de Domeyko, well off the standard circuit, and the colour is real geology rather than a trick of the light: copper turns the rock green, iron turns it red and rust, and salt and gypsum leave the white bands between them.

Because it runs in the morning rather than at sunset, it also does not compete with anything else you have booked. You are back in San Pedro by early afternoon with the evening free.

Yerbas Buenas is the reason to take the guide

The petroglyph field is a scatter of boulders you could walk past without noticing, and without someone pointing them out you will see a fraction of what is there. The carvings include llamas, foxes, birds, human figures, and animals from outside the desert, left by caravans that traded between the coast, the altiplano and the Amazon side of the Andes.

This is also where guide quality shows. Reviews of this tour praise named guides, Chris, Christóbal, Daniel, Lorena, by name and at length. One two-star review says the opposite: that the group was mixed across languages and the guide spoke mostly Spanish despite an English listing. Both are on the record below.

Budget for the entrance fees, and check the listing's own numbers

Two fees are excluded and paid on the day: 5,000 CLP for Rainbow Valley and 5,000 CLP for Yerbas Buenas, roughly $5 each at current rates, so about $10 per person on top of the $68.50 fare.

Worth knowing: the Viator listing writes these as "$6,250 USD ($5,000 CLP)", which is a currency-conversion error on the platform, not a real price. Nobody is charging $6,250 to see a petroglyph. The Rainbow Valley gate also lists CLP 2,000 for teens and CLP 3,000 for seniors, so check at the gate. Bring Chilean pesos in cash for both.

What to bring on this tour

Preparing properly makes the difference between enjoying the desert and feeling uncomfortable. Essential gear to carry: Warm layers, windproof jacket, sturdy closed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 50+, reusable water bottle (at least 1.5 liters), and cash in Chilean pesos for park entry fees. Dress in layers because morning and evening temperatures drop rapidly while midday sun is intense.

Age and health

The listing does not recommend the tour for pregnant travelers, offers infant seats and rates the fitness level as suitable for everyone. Other operators set a minimum age of 6. The route climbs well above San Pedro, so give yourself a day or two in town first.

On the Ground at the Valley

Nomades describes the valley visit as a 1-hour hike out and 1 hour back at an easy pace. Cascada breaks it into stages: pay at the entrance first, then a rock corridor at the first viewpoint, then about 30 minutes of gentle walking. There is almost no shade and the sun is intense at altitude, so a brimmed hat and sunscreen go on before you leave the van.

Mid-morning light is the strongest window for the colours and midday flattens them, which is why the 7 AM departure works in your favour.

What the Gates Cost

Both entrances are paid in cash on the day and are not in the tour price. The Rainbow Valley gate charges CLP 5,000 for adults, CLP 3,000 for seniors and CLP 2,000 for teenagers aged 12 to 17, per the San Pedro Atacama ticket page. Yerbas Buenas adds a flat CLP 5,000.

Bring pesos, not dollars, and check current rates at the gate.

Stop Order

Operators run the stops in different orders. Nomades and Howlanders visit Yerbas Buenas first, then the valley, then Salado River viewpoints before a return around 12:30. This listing names the valley first.

Ask at pickup which way your van runs it.

Good fit

Travellers on their second or third day who have done the headline sights, and anyone interested in archaeology.

Two Valleys, Two Trips

Atacama Chile Tours ranks Rainbow Valley as the lightest on crowds of the striped valleys and mid-morning as its best photo window, while Moon Valley at 13 km draws the heaviest crowds. If you have already done the Valle de la Luna sunset tour and want colour and petroglyphs without the queue, Rainbow Valley earns its morning.

Place It on Your Acclimatisation Ladder

Sources put the site at around 3,000 m (Cascada), over 3,000 m (Outdoor Index) and a maximum of 3,500 m (Nomades and Howlanders). Nomades advises booking it near the end of your stay. That is below El Tatio at about 4,300 m and the altiplano lagoons at 4,000-4,200 m, so it works as a step between low valley days and the high-altitude ones.

The walk itself is easy, but the thin dry air, cold early-morning start and strong sun all bite harder at 3,500 m, so carry water and layers regardless of fitness.
